چکیده

Despite a long history of research and debate, there is still no standard definition of intelligence. This has lead some to believe that intelligence may be approximately described, but cannot be fully defined. We believe that this degree of pessimism is too strong. Although there is no single standard definition, if one surveys the many definitions that have been proposed, strong similarities between many of the definitions quickly become obvious. In many cases different definitions, suitably interpreted, actually say the same thing but in different words. This observation lead us to believe that a single general and encompassing definition for arbitrary systems was possible. Indeed we have constructed a formal definition of intelligence, called universal intelligence [20], which has strong connections to the theory of optimal learning agents [18]. Rather than exploring very general formal definitions of intelligence, here we will instead take the opportunity to present the many informal definitions that we have collected over the years. Naturally, compiling a complete list would be impossible as many definitions of intelligence are buried deep inside articles and books. Nevertheless, the 55 definitions presented below are, to the best of our knowledge, the largest and most well referenced collection there is. We continue to add to this collect as we discover further definitions, and keep the most up to date version of the collection available online [21]. If you know of additional definitions that we could add, please send us an email. The definitions are grouped into three sections. Firstly, we present definitions that have been proposed by groups or organisations. The next section contains definitions from psychologists. The final section lists definitions from

A Collection of Definitions of Intelligence

This paper is a survey of a large number of informal definitions of “intelligence” that the authors have collected over the years. Naturally, compiling a complete list would be impossible as many definitions of intelligence are buried deep inside articles and books. Nevertheless, the 70-odd definitions presented here are, to the authors’ knowledge, the largest and most well referenced collectio...

Tests of Machine Intelligence

Although the definition and measurement of intelligence is clearly of fundamental importance to the field of artificial intelligence, no general survey of definitions and tests of machine intelligence exists. Indeed few researchers are even aware of alternatives to the Turing test and its many derivatives. In this paper we fill this gap by providing a short survey of the many tests of machine i...

A Universal Measure of Intelligence for Artificial Agents

A fundamental difficulty in artificial intelligence is that nobody really knows what intelligence is, especially for systems with senses, environments, motivations and cognitive capacities which are very different to our own. If we look to definitions of human intelligence given by experts, we see that although there is no consensus, most views cluster around a few common perspectives and share...

Characteristics of Computational Intelligence (Quantitative Approach)

 These days, intelligence is one of the features of software agents. However, developing this feature via a systematic software engineering approach suffers from some shortages. One of the open issues is related to specifying intelligence features that are expected from intelligent agents. The source of the problem is different definitions of intelligence that are presented from different pers...

Understanding (dis)similarity measures

Intuitively, the concept of similarity is the notion to measure an inexact matching between two entities of the same reference set. The notions of similarity and its close relative dissimilarity are widely used in many fields of Artificial Intelligence. Yet they have many different and often partial definitions or properties, usually restricted to one field of application and thus incompatible ...
